On was founded in 2010 in Zurich by Olivier Bernhard — a former Ironman and duathlon world champion — together with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti. Bernhard had prototyped the first CloudTec sole by gluing cut sections of garden hose to the bottom of a running shoe; the hollow rubber pods compressed on landing and locked firm for push-off, and the idea scaled. The brand still runs its R&D out of Zurich and has been listed on the NYSE since September 2021.
The Cloudsurfer Trail is the only CloudTec Phase shoe in the trail line — lower lugs than the Cloudvista or Cloudultra, built for road-to-trail and non-technical trail days. Helion foam with Missiongrip rubber tuned soft-sticky for wet-rock and dry. The WP variant adds ~33 g and On's proprietary waterproof membrane for wet winter or shoulder-season use.
