On was founded in 2010 in Zurich by Olivier Bernhard — a former Ironman and duathlon world champion — together with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti. Bernhard had prototyped the first CloudTec sole by gluing cut sections of garden hose to the bottom of a running shoe; the hollow rubber pods compressed on landing and locked firm for push-off, and the idea scaled. The brand still runs its R&D out of Zurich and has been listed on the NYSE since September 2021.
The Cloudeclipse was On's first production shoe over 40 mm stack — a genuine maximalist daily built around doubled-up CloudTec pods and a double layer of Helion. Reviewers consistently flag the upper as among the best On has made. Now superseded in the catalogue by the Cloudsurfer Max, but still the cleanest expression of the 'rocker, not plate' max-cushion idea in this lineup.
