On was founded in 2010 in Zurich by Olivier Bernhard — a former Ironman and duathlon world champion — together with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti. Bernhard had prototyped the first CloudTec sole by gluing cut sections of garden hose to the bottom of a running shoe; the hollow rubber pods compressed on landing and locked firm for push-off, and the idea scaled. The Cloudrunner 2 is On's stability daily — a higher drop (10 mm claimed, ~8.5 mm measured), full-coverage outsole, and a firmer Speedboard execution than the neutral line. The Waterproof variant adds a membrane and measurable extra midfoot stiffness (lab tests show a stiffness bump to 5/5 versus 3/5 on the standard). It is a genuine mild-stability trainer rather than a medial-post corrector.
