On was founded in 2010 in Zurich by Olivier Bernhard — a former Ironman and duathlon world champion — together with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti. Bernhard had prototyped the first CloudTec sole by gluing cut sections of garden hose to the bottom of a running shoe; the hollow rubber pods compressed on landing and locked firm for push-off, and the idea scaled. The brand still runs its R&D out of Zurich and has been listed on the NYSE since September 2021.
The Cloudsurfer was the 2023 reset of the On story — a fully new CloudTec Phase midsole where pod shapes are tuned by Finite Element Analysis, no Speedboard, a rocker that does the propulsion work instead of a plate. The Cloudsurfer 2 firms up the Helion for a more resilient ride, keeps the Phase pod geometry, and adds a more substantial outsole. Pearl Ivory is the original V1 colourway — same platform.
