On was founded in 2010 in Zurich by Olivier Bernhard — a former Ironman and duathlon world champion, together with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti. Bernhard prototyped the first CloudTec sole by gluing cut sections of garden hose to the bottom of a running shoe; the hollow rubber pods compressed on landing and locked firm for push-off, and the idea scaled. The brand still runs its R&D out of Zurich and has been listed on the NYSE since September 2021.
The Cloudsurfer Trail takes the cushioned Cloudsurfer road platform off the pavement — a trail running shoe with a lugged, trail-oriented outsole for dirt, gravel and rooty singletrack. Where the Cloudrunner 2 is a road stability trainer, the Cloudsurfer Trail trades pavement manners for traction, so the North Shore version of an easy run stays an easy run.
